How long will rodents last in the freezer?

The freezer life of rodents depends on the size of the rodent and the packaging. Pinkies, Fuzzies, Pups, and Hoppers will last for up to six months in the freezer without becoming freezer burnt. Anything larger will last up to one year in the freezer. With this said, all of our rodents are froze individually and are stored in freezer bags for your convenience. Air is manually removed.  Remember to remove air in between feedings as air is the main culpirt of freezer burn!

How do you thaw out frozen mice and rats?

Ideally, thawing at room temperature is best to keep the integrity of the raw meat. However, if you need to expedite the process, you may float your frozen rodents (inside a bag) in luke warm water. If you float the rodent directly in the water, you will remove its scent, which attracts your pet.  In addition, you do not want to use a microwave or boiling water as it may "cook" the meat slightly.

What do you feed your animals and how are they housed?

We feed our rodents a specially formulated rodent chow, which is renowned for providing a consistent nutrition program to produce the highest quality.  Our rodent chow is higher in calcium, phosphorus, protein, and fat than LabDiet and Mazuri.  Our rodents are in a heated/air conditioned building, which is temperature controlled to mid 70's. We use pine shavings not cedar (as cedar can be toxic to other animals). When new breeding stock is introduced, we have a quarantined area to maintain our healthy stock.

Why feed frozen rodents to reptiles, birds of prey, and raw food pets?

One of the biggest reasons to feed frozen rodents to your animals over live rodents is the decreased risk of injury to your animal. Live rodents do bite and can injure your pet. In addition, frozen rodents can be easily stored for up to a year in the freezer, thus, making it convenient for the owner for larger quantities at a low-cost price. One note of caution, whether feeding live rodents or frozen, to decrease the chances of introducing disease into your pets, find a quality breeder or pet store that you trust.
